I have a 5 week old male betta with a slight burn on his rear section and I'm not sure why.

It's kind of an awkward spot because it's between his gills and his tail. I don't want him to swim in it because it's hard to watch and I also don't want to do surgery. I have a friend who is a vet and she said it could be razor burn (an injury of the skin that's been shaved off and red because it's been nicked too many times) or some sort of bacteria infection. I can't see any redness in his gills or his tail so I'm not sure what it is. Is there anything else I should do to help him out?

Thanks for any help!

EDIT: I tried some fish food in his aquarium so I'll give it another week. I'll keep this post updated as well.

I don't see any redness, so you probably didn't nip off a lot of skin.

I think the best thing to do is just be patient and give the aquarium time to heal.

If you do decide to keep the fish, keep an eye out for any further nicks and clean the tank if any appears. You don't want him to get an infection.

Thanks for your reply. I was really scared to see this because it's between his gills and his tail so I didn't want to do surgery if I had the chance of infection or anything. I don't have any plans to move him so I'll just be patient and give him time to heal. I'm just hoping it's not too serious because it's on his bum. I have a bunch of little nicks like that from the feeding so I'll make sure to get a good look at him.

Yes, that's exactly how it happened. He just got out of the water and I'm not sure how or why. I guess he must have gotten something in his mouth and somehow got it on his belly. I was really worried about it because it was in the middle of his body and it was almost in his gills so I figured he might have a bacterial infection.

I tried putting him back in the tank after I cleaned it and that's when I noticed it. It's not bleeding but I'm not sure how bad it is. It's right next to a red spot on his gills and the spot looks about the same size. So I'm not sure if it's actually a gill infection or not. I did clean it with fish food and it feels a little better. I can feel the heat and the roughness but it's not bleeding and he's not lethargic. He's been active for the past couple of hours and just seems to be enjoying himself.

I can't tell if it's just a nipped off a little skin or something worse. I guess I'll just be patient. I'm definitely keeping a close eye on him and I'll let you know if there's any new nicks or if anything looks worse.

When my bichir gets nipped, the nip usually bleeds very little, and often times when I put him in the tank, he will lick it clean or rub it, and it heals quickly and no more nip. I have no clue why this happened to your bichir. If the nip bleeds, you can put the bichir in a quarantine tank for a few days to make sure its not bacteria related. That is if you want to be sure of whats going on and are ok with putting him back into your tank.

I have a female betta named "Celeste" she is about 7 months old and she has been acting really weird since a week ago.

She hasn't been swimming much. She's also been having problems breathing. It's like her gills are swelling. I've had to give her nebulizers, and antibiotics. This was really weird because she hasn't been doing that. I thought her gills were fine because I noticed her gills are really big and really red.

I haven't done any feeding for the past few days and I was planning to feed her. I was planning to feed her fish food.

She's been in her own quarantine tank for the past 5 days. She is the only fish in there and I don't know if it's related but I just bought the tank a few days ago.

I'm new to this site so I'm not sure how to link my thread but I'm not sure where it is. Anyways, I posted a picture of Celeste's front and she has nips that were put on her by a different fish. You can tell by the color on her body and how her gills and fins are swollen. I can't see any redness though on her body or gills but she also seems to be getting nipped at a lot. She has one red spot in the middle of her gills. The one she has has turned white but the one I have is still red. I don't know if she has a gill infection or if I have a bacterial infection or what but my husband was also bit by a friend's gill and it had a red spot in the middle of it and I couldn't see any redness.

I noticed something weird in her quarantine tank a couple of days ago when I was feeding her.

I was feeding her some algae from the tank and she was grabbing it in her mouth and trying to swallow it. It looked like she was trying to eat her own skin. She actually swam away from me a couple of times and I was surprised because she doesn't have any injuries so I took her to the vet. He said that it was probably just a nervous
