How long does my dog have to wear a cone collar

We got a new puppy last week. He is 6 months old and weighs 25 pounds. We had him wear a cone collar until his teeth were all done growing. When we started training him on a leash, he was a bit confused because he didnt know how to get off of the cone and it was really hard to take him off of it. He is still confused. After reading this, I was wondering if he would have to be on the cone for a long time. Do you know how long it should be on for him to be more comfortable with the collar? Thank you!

Most cone collars are put on for a week or so. As soon as they begin to figure it out and stop pulling on them, it will be time to move him to the larger harness. He needs to feel secure with it and stop tugging it.

I think that a week should be enough. Maybe the puppy was on it for 2 days or something. We started with a 4-in. diameter cone collar. It seemed like too small. After a few days, we added a 3-in. diameter one and now we are moving to a 2.5-in. diameter cone collar.

It takes time to wear a collar down, but not too long. I think 1 or 2 days is enough. If the dog is pulling on the collar, he may not be ready yet. Just make sure to check with your vet.

I believe the collar would only be on for 1-2 weeks or so as long as he was not getting under control and learning the basic commands. After that, I would move on to a harness to learn the basic commands.

If you are starting out with the harness, I would start with a collar first. The harness should come next and you can start taking it off after he is a little more confident. You might have to keep the collar on for awhile, depending on how the puppy reacts to it.

I have never had a puppy, but it sounds like you are pretty close to the right schedule. I would start putting the cone collar on after he is 6 weeks old, then I would take it off when he is around 8 weeks old.

I'm glad you're thinking about your puppy's well being. I do not think a puppy should be on a harness for very long. Once he's a good, confident puller, then you can slowly let go of the leash, but I would still have him wear the harness until he's around 16 weeks old. You should also be sure to get his teeth trimmed. I can't tell if you've already done that or not, so if you haven't, then that's a good idea to do. If you are using a collar, I would recommend that you use a collar and a muzzle. If the puppy does get loose from the collar, he's going to bite/bark at something. You don't want him to get in trouble, and you don't want your pup to get into any kind of situation where they get into trouble. A puppy should not wear a harness for a very long time.

I just got a new puppy 2 weeks ago and was wondering how long he should wear a cone collar or if it should even be used until after he has been de-wormed and has had his teeth and ears cleaned.

I think the cone would be fine to use for the first few weeks as long as it isn't bothering him. Some breeds have very sensitive ears, and can be bothered by the metal of the cone. I used a cone for my first 3 years, and I used a muzzle until I got to the point that I felt comfortable using the collar with the leash.

I used a cone until he was 6 months old (3 month's and 6 weeks) then moved him to a harness with the leash. After about 2 weeks I had it off. I do not have to keep a leash on him though.

If he's going to be on it a long time, I would get a second opinion from a reputable local vet. Most vets have their own recommendations. Also, keep in mind that cones come in a lot of sizes, which is why I have mentioned 3" and 2.5" sizes in this thread.

Our local vet told us to let him wear it until the teeth were done growing in. I guess because there is a big risk of damage if they are too small and they grow in crooked.
